Reason Electric Bass

The latest Reason Refill from software developers Propellerhead is Electric Bass, a product that’s dedicated to the sounds of — you’ve guessed it — the electric bass guitar! It’s designed to deliver “amazingly realistic electric bass sounds for music producers of all contemporary music genres”, and contains Combinator patches of eight different bass guitars, including Fender Jazz and Precision basses, a Gibson Les Paul, a Music Man Stingray, a Rickenbacker 4001, a Kay hollow body and a Gibson EB0.

Each patch has samples of different articulations and embellishments common to the bass guitar, such as hammer-ons, slides and release sounds. To further increase realism, the patches were recorded with numerous velocity layers, using Direct Injection (DI) and a variety of miking techniques through two different amp rigs simultaneously. The beauty of this approach (which Propellerhead call ‘Hypersampling’) is that the signals from the DI and the two amps can be mixed in Reason, enabling the user to shape the sound to suit their track.

Usefully, and like many other sample-based content libraries, there are 16-bit and 24-bit versions of the samples. This means that the user can load the 16-bit samples for tracking, where minimal CPU strain is important, then load up the ‘full-fat’ 24-bit versions for the final mix, where the best possible audio resolution is desired.

Propellerhead’s Electric Bass Refill costs £89 including VAT, and is available from your local Propellerhead dealer, and from the web site of their recently appointed UK distributor, Sound Technology.
