InVision microphone shockmounts
It's difficult to get excited about microphone shockmounts, but Rycote's new InVision range has caused quite a stir. There are eight models in the range, INV1 to INV8, each using Rycote’s new, patented Lyre mounting system.
The Lyre design comprises a pair of what Rycote call “virtually unbreakable” W-shaped mic holders, which clip onto the mic and hold it in place. The clips have a relatively long transmission path (compared to traditional shockmounts), so stand-borne noise is kept to a minimum.
At the Frankfurt show, Rycote had an InVision demonstration with a pair of mics on desktop stands, one in a conventional 'clip', and one in an InVision shockmount. The mics were hooked up to a preamp and a pair of headhones, which were set to listen to the mic's signals. When the regularly mounted mic was turned on, there was a lot of background noise, and tapping on the desk was clearly audible. Listening to the signal from the Rycote mounted mic, a lot of rumble disappeared, and taps on the desk could barely be heard — impressive!
What makes the new shockmounts even more desirable is their low price; they cost around £35 each!
