Following on from the success of their ModPlay plug-in, FSK Audio have announced the launch of their latest creation. Built in collaboration with Mark Jeffery, the original software engineer behind Pro Tools, Bark24 Dyn is a 24-band dynamics processor that allows users to shape their audio in ways that go far beyond what’s possible with traditional EQs and compressors.
Bark24 Dyn has been named due to its use of the Bark cale, a psychoacoustic model of how humans perceive sound. The plug-in is capable of dynamically adjusting volume levels across 24 bands that each centre around a ‘critical band’ of the human hearing range, an approach which is said to help reduce masking between adjacent frequencies and focus control on the regions that matter most to human perception. The company say that the method results in cleaner, more transparent, and more musical results than standard compression and EQ techniques.

There are four processing modes available: Limit, Gate, Expand and Upcomp, all of which are applied to all of the plug-ins’s 24 bands. The threshold can be set individually for each band — it’s also possible to ‘draw in’ a curve that spans multiple bands — and each mode retains its own threshold settings. Attack and release parameters are provided, and are applied across all bands and modes, and an Auto Threshold function allows the plug-in to automatically set the bands’ thresholds based on the level of the incoming signal. a Band Contour control then offers three different filter-slope options for the plug-in’s band splitting.
FSK Audio say that Bark24 Dyn is capable of carrying out everything from subtle corrective work to more obvious creative effects, and will as well suited to tackling ‘edgy’ and ‘boomy’ source material as it is “tearing sound apart for creative chaos.”
Compatibility
Bark24 Dyn is supported on Windows and macOS systems (no minimum versions specified). VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available.
