Building on the success of their debut instrument, the e7 — reviewed here in SOS July 2023 — GS Music have announced the launch of a second desktop synth. The Bree6 is a six-voice polysynth that has been designed to offer a straightforward and intuitive user experience with no menu-diving, and offers a wealth of expressive performance capabilities thanks to support for MPE.
The Bree6 features a single oscillator per voice and sub-oscillator. There’s a choice of sawtooth and pulse waveforms, with the latter capable of having its pulse width modulated by the synth’s LFO; the sub-oscillator generates a square wave one octave below the main oscillator. A four-pole ladder-type low-pass filter follows, and can be modulated by the first of the instrument’s two ADSR envelope generators or the LFO, as well as via the modulation wheel or aftertouch.
The single LFO is capable of generating a selection of different waveforms — triangle, ramp up, ramp down, square and random with sample and hold — with a frequency range extending from 0.1 to 100 Hz. It can be used to apply modulation to the Bree6’s VCO, VCF and VCA sections. While the instrument itself maintains an entirely analogue signal path, there are some digital effects present, including an ensemble-style chorus and a delay with a maximum time of up to one second.
GC Music have implemented MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) support, and say that they have carefully tested the instrument with the Expressive E Osmose, the Roger Linn Design LinnStrument and moForte’s GeoShred controller software.
