Logic Pro 10.2 integrates Alchemy synth

Update adds Alchemy sample manipulation synth from Camel Audio acquisition

The latest update to Logic Pro X adds a new virtual instrument to Apple’s ever-popular DAW. Alchemy is a fully featured sample-based synthesizer with a whole stack of sound generation options and some exciting performance controls. Up to four sound sources can be layered and combined, from a list that includes additive, spectral, formant, granular, sampled and virtual analogue sounds. Virtual analogue oscillators, modelled filters and a collection of morphing and resynthesis tools add further sound sculpting potential.

Based on the Camel Audio soft synth of the same name but significantly enhanced and redesigned, Alchemy comes with over 3,000 presets covering a wide range of genres. Dynamic, animated sounds are a particular focus, thanks to a modulation matrix with over 100 mod sources to call upon. Meanwhile, independent arpeggiators can be applied to each of the four sound sources. The synth’s Transform Pad provides quick access to eight different presets, which make good use of the integrated effects rack, while a pair of assignable X/Y pads let you add further movement and interest. Along with the sounds already included, you can import EXS24 instruments into Alchemy or create your own samples using the sampling features built in.

While Alchemy is the big news in the v10.2 update, a number of smaller new features have also been added to Logic Pro X. These include support for the new Macbook’s Force Touch trackpad, expanded MIDI clock options designed to improve sync compatibility with external MIDI devices, and 1,000 new Apple Loops. You’ll also now be able to create custom track icons using your own image files. Apple’s MainStage and Logic Remote apps have also been updated. The v3.2 update to MainStage adds the Alchemy synth plug-in, while Logic Remote 1.2.2 includes support for Alchemy’s Transform Pad and X/Y controllers. All three updates should be available now.
