Blackstar have announced the launch of the POLAR 4, a new audio interface that shares the same guitar-specific features as the POLAR 2 but comes equipped with additional I/O. The new unit increases the I/O count to two instrument inputs, four mic pres, four line-level outputs, a pair of headphone outputs and MIDI I/O. It also includes a loopback feature that provides convenient routing of system audio alongside its own signals.
FET Inputs & Enhance Feature
The FET-based instrument inputs boast an ultra-low noise design with high headroom, and feature an Enhance switch which engages a unique circuit that has been designed to mimic the input stage of a real valve amp, including all of its non-linear behaviours and characteristics. What’s more, the company say that with Enhance active, the interface's input stage will never digitally clip, allowing users to push their signal levels like they would with an amp without worrying about ruining a take.
As for microphone and line-level signals, each channel of the POLAR 4 features an XLR/TRS combo socket and boasts a high-quality preamp that has been based on the design of an (unnamed!) sought-after vintage studio classic. Phantom power is switchable on a global basis, and when working with a mic or line-level signal, the Enhance function serves to introduce some ‘air’ and ‘clarity’ that promise to complement sources such as vocals and acoustic guitar.
Control & Software
As for physical control, the top panel of the interface is equipped with a large master volume knob for the main monitor output, along with gain dials for each channel and a pair of toggle switches that allow users to select the appropriate input source and engage the Enhance circuitry. Software routing is then taken care of by a Polar Control application, which also provides zero-latency monitoring.
The POLAR 4 also comes with a free software bundle that includes Blackstar’s St. James Plugin Suite — reviewed here (main plug-in) and here (expansion) — as well as Ableton Live Lite, ReLab LX480 Essentials Reverb, Melodyne Essentials and more.
