The latest addition to Sampleson’s virtual instrument collection is a generative drum synth that’s capable of creating production-ready drum patterns with a single click. Tronic combines a pair of analogue-modelled oscillators with a 16-step sequencer, and comes packed with parameters that allow users to fine-tune the beats it generates.
Sampleson say that they designed Tronic to serve as a starting point for new creations, and that although it’s capable of generating high-quality beats, the best results will be obtained by opening up the editor and tweaking the initial output. Users are presented with three beat styles: Hit Maker, a mode that creates simple but powerful drum and bass-like patterns; Rave Master, a similar style to Hit Maker but with more sophisticated bass and synth patterns; and Synth Hero, which creates synth arpeggios and decorations.
Although Tronic is capable of generating beats automatically, it still boasts a comprehensive set of parameters that allow users to edit and fine-tune the results.
There’s plenty of user control on offer, with a dedicated oscillator section providing dedicated Decay, Click, Frequency and Wave controls for each of the two analogue-modelled oscillators, along with an FM Mod parameter — there are also level controls for both oscillators, as well as a noise generator. The filter section then offers a choice of low- and high-pass modes along with Cutoff, Decay, Filter Envelope, Filter Q, Noise Decay and VCA Decay controls, along with a Hard Sync button. The lower section of the GUI is occupied by the 16-step sequencer, while a column to the right-hand side makes it possible to assign note or velocity modulation to any of the instrument’s parameters.

Tronic is supported on PCs running Windows 7 or higher, and Macs running macOS 10.7 and above. VST3 and AU plug-in versions are available.
