Stereo ribbon mic on sale now
A few years ago, ribbon mics were few and far between, but they've seen something of a revival in recent years. Last year saw the successful launch of the Sontronics Sigma, which was intended to capture the rich, smooth sound of a classic ribbon mic, whilst overcoming some of the design issues that can make older ribbon mics hard to use in a modern studio environment. In fact, so successful has it been that Sontronics have developed a stereo version, which they're calling the Apollo.
Its two ribbons give the Apollo a Blumlein X/Y response in stereo mode, but it can also operate as a mono figure-of-eight mic if required. Like the Sigma, the Apollo is phantom-powered, and as a result, say Sontronics, can be connected to any mic preamp without impedance problems. At 12dB (A-weighted) the Apollo betters even the Sigma's impressively low self-noise figure, and it has a quoted frequency response of 20Hz-20kHz.
The Apollo comes with Sontronics' unique mounting system, which is claimed to eliminate stand-borne noise, and is supplied in a flightcase along with the Y-lead needed to connect its single six-pin output to two stereo XLRs. The Apollo is available now, with a retail price of £829 including VAT.
What's more, when you buy an Apollo, Sigma or any other Sontronics mics or cables, you're now protected by the company's unique Lifetime Warranty. It's a bold move, guaranteeing the product against manufacturing defects and faults for as long as it remains in the possession of the person who buys it from new.
