Version 1.10 free to download
The X48 from Tascam is a formidable tool in live recording circles. It can record up to 48 tracks simultaneously, at rates up to 24-bit/96kHz with minumum fuss, all within a compact, rackmountable case. Tascam have released a free firmware update, version 1.10, that improves the general stability of the device, and also brings with it features that some users will find very handy.

With a new “fail-safe” recording mode, data files created by the X48 are now saved every five seconds, so if there’s a power cut, you have at least some of your audio remaining on the hard disk. (Previously, such a failure could have completely wiped the tracks.)
Another new mode fills the attached VGA monitor with meters, making it easy to keep an eye on input levels from across the studio, say. To download the update, head to the Tascam web site.
