Tascam have announced the upcoming launch of two new handheld recorders that build on the strengths of their popular DR-series devices. The DR-05XP and DR-07XP both feature 32-bit floating point recording, offer simple one-handed operation and are capable of functioning as 2-in/2-out USB audio interfaces.
The company say that each model has been designed to provide users with the ability to capture high-quality recordings, with a focus on ease of use and a minimal setup time. Both are capable of 32-bit floating point operation and support sample rates up to 96kHz, and promise to deliver low-noise, distortion-free recordings. SDRC cards up to 512GB are supported, and the devices boast a battery life of over 17 hours.
As well as their main function as a handheld recorder, the units also feature a built-in 2-in/2-out USB audio interface, and can also function as USB microphones. Other handy extras include an onboard chromatic tuner, reverb effect, three high-pass filter options and an automatic tone output that can be fed to a camera to assist with synchronising audio and video files during post-production.
The key difference between the two models lies in the built-in microphones: the DR-05XP is equipped with a pair of fixed-position omnis, while the DR-07XP is kitted out with a pair of cardioids that can be rotated and configured as either an A-B or X-Y pair. Both models are capable of withstanding SPLs up to 125dB, and also feature a stereo mini-jack connector that can be used to connect miniature microphones with plug-in power or external line-level sources for mono or stereo recording.

The DR-05XP & DR-07XP are available to order now, priced at $119£114.99 and $159£149.99 respectively. Prices include VAT. Units are expected to be shipping in February 2025.
