Genelec 8260A uses coaxially mounted drivers
Coaxial driver-mounting, where a monitor’s high-frequency driver is mounted in the centre of a mid or bass driver, appears to be undergoing a renaissance. Equator Audio’s Q8 monitors use a caoxially mounted two-way system, and received a positive review in SOS October 2009 (available to read online for eSub subscribers), and now Genelec have announced their new 8260A, a three-way monitor with a coaxially mounted tweeter and mid-range driver. In theory, mounting the two drivers together can aid accurate timing and phase coherence.
Genelec are, as ever, keen to eliminate diffraction, and have created a ‘Minimal Diffraction Coaxial’ mounting system. This feature is, unsurprisingly, designed to minimise the diffraction that can occur where one driver is mounted in another. The 8260A cabinet is styled in the same manner as many of its Genelec siblings, incorporating a Minimum Diffraction Enclosure (a smooth, contoured shape) intended to minimise the disruption of sound waves that can be caused by sharp cabinet edges.
The 8260As also incorporate a DSP system to handle most aspects of audio processing, from the crossovers to room correction equalisation and timing delays. Loudspeaker-management software is provided to control the DSP functions, and comes complete with a calibrated microphone for setting up the room correction. The Genelec 8260As will be released in the first quarter of 2010, with a price yet to be announced.
