The latest expansion pack for Toontrack’s ever-popular virtual drum platforms has arrived, delivering a set of four seven-tom kits that cover a range of classic and modern fusion styles. Available for both EZDrummer and Superior Drummer, Fusion EZX includes a total of 20 cymbals, 10 bass drums, 14 snares and an assortment of extras that include side snares, octobans, cowbells and a gong bass drum.
Recorded by engineer Stefano Civetta (Nile Rogers, Ed Sheeran, Earth, Wind and Fire), the expansion captures drummer Pete Riley (Guthrie Govan, Keith Emerson, Ritchie Kotzen) performing at at School Farm, a brand new state-of-the-art studio in Essex, England. The studio boasts some impressive gear — including an SSL duality console along with 24 channels of Neve preamps — and importantly, features a spacious and great-sounding live room that Toontrack say provided the perfect choice for capturing a vibrant drum sound.
Each of the four kits captured for the release were hand-picked for their particular tone, while one has been recorded with two different sets of drum heads, essentially providing users with a fifth kit option. Close and room miking duties were taken care of by an array of high-end mics from DPA, and as with all of Toontrack’s offerings, a comprehensive built-in mixer provides users with detailed control over the sound of each kit. For those who’d prefer a mix-ready sound, or even just a good starting point, Fusion EKX comes loaded with a collection of presets engineered by Stefano Civetta.
