Yamaha Tenori On hits the USA

Tenori On Tour
Yamaha’s Tenori-On hand-held sequencer (reviewed in SOS February 2008 and online here) is to become available in the USA, having been initially launched exclusively for the UK market.

The Tenori-On caused quite a stir when it was first launched, as it’s quite unlike any other product available from a mainstream manufacturer. Its game-like interface comprises 256 backlit buttons that enable the input of note and controller data, and 16 different layers offer a range of modes, which can create sequences according to rules dictated by shapes created by selecting points on the button matrix.

It’s got 256 built-in sound patches, including some ‘standard’ instruments such as drums, basses and strings, with some more abstract bleeps and boinks for good measure. Users can also upload their own samples to the device.

The US launch will kick off with two free events at the Southpaw night club in Brooklyn, New York on the 16th April, and at 1015 Folsom in San Francisco on the 18th April. Guests will include Tenori-On designer Toshio Iwai, plus artists who have already implemented the Tenori-On in their live shows.
