Three years on from the launch of the MODX+ series, Yamaha have introduced a new synth line-up that delivers three compact, lightweight and affordable alternatives aimed at both stage and studio use.
The company say that the new MODX M instruments build on the legacy of the flagship Montage M offerings, bringing their cutting-edge technology and features to a wider audience. Available in 61-, 76- and 88-key variants (the MODX M6, MODX M7 and MODX M8), the latest arrivals offer a wide variety of sounds thanks to a combination of three onboard sound engines. There’s AN-X, which promises to deliver some vintage-style analogue warmth; FM-X, a modern-sounding FM-based engine; and AWM2, a sample-based engine dedicated to ultra-realistic instrument sounds.
All three models feature an intuitive set of performance controls that include eight physical faders and a Super Knob that’s capable of applying multi-parameter modulation. They’ll soon be joined by the free Expanded Softsynth Plugin (E.S.P.), a virtual version of the MODX M that integrates seamlessly with a DAW and enables users to create and edit their performances anywhere. The software is set to launch early in 2026, and will be available to all registered users.
