Computer-friendly hardware sampling
Roland used the Frankfurt Music Fair to launch a new sampling workstation, the SP606 (pictured). The latest in its long line of SP-series ‘Groovesamplers’, the 606 has some familiar features, such as 16 velocity-sensitive pads, a built-in sequencer and effects, a D-Beam proximity controller, and up to 512MB of storage on Compact Flash cards, with the ability to interface with and backup onto a computer via USB.
The SP606 also offers unprecedented integration with computer-based sampling and sequencing via an included piece of Cakewalk-developed software, P606. This acts as an editor/librarian for SP606 sounds, but also offers synthesis, Acidised file playback and loop-based sequencing functions. What’s more, the SP606 is designed to serve as a hardware control surface for P606, making the SP606/P606 bundle a neat, self-contained software and hardware system. The ‘606 bundle’ will retail for £549.
Roland have also announced the DS5, DS7 and DS8 — a new range of active, 24-bit, 192kHz-capable digital nearfield reference monitors fitted with an extensive range of connections: XLR, AES/EBU, co-axial and optical inputs.
