In a bizarre coincidence, particularly amongst the ultra-competitive cymbal companies, both Zildjian and Paiste have launched black cymbal ranges in the same month. For Zildjian, who celebrate their 385th anniversary this year, the Pitch Black range is the company's first ever colour-coated cymbal and is made from B12 bronze alloy and finished with a proprietary coating process.
class="bodyf">Aimed unashamedly at metal and hard rock drummers, the range veers towards the larger sizes and heavier weights necessary to deliver the kind of clout that can punch through the loudest of metal barrages. The cymbals feature new profiles, cups, lathing and hammering techniques, and the special black finish with white logos is designed so the cymbal is both highly visual and durable, yet opens up the same as a regular heavier-weight cymbal.
class="bodyi">The range includes a 22-inch ride, 20-inch crash/ride, 18-inch and 16-inch crashes, 18-inch China, 13-inch splash, 15-inch Mastersound hi-hats and 14-inch hi-hats. The 22-inch ride has an oversized bell for extra volume, the 20-inch crash-ride has both an explosive crash and suitable stick articulation for a primary or secondary ride and both the hi-hats have uncoated undersides to maximise the 'chk' sound.
