The latest launch from API brings a new flavour of compression to their range of 500-series modules. The 525A FET Compressor maintains the discrete audio path of the popular 525, but boasts an expanded feature set that the company say make it an even more versatile tool for the modern studio user.
The 525A employs the company’s proprietary transformers along with 2510 and 2520 op-amps, retaining the sonic character of the original 525 as well as offering the solid build and impressive technical performance for which API are known. As with the 525, the top of the module’s panel houses In (Threshold) and Out (Make-up) controls, which are influenced by a larger Ceiling control, making it possible to increase the amount of gain reduction being applied while simultaneously raising the output to avoid level changes.
New to the 525A are a selection of attack times that range from 15 microseconds to 15 milliseconds, and seven selectable release modes that span from 0.05 milliseconds to 2 seconds. As for visual feedback, the module sports a 1970s-style analogue VU meter that indicates the level of gain reduction being applied.
