Apple CEO resigns

Steve Jobs stands down

Steve Jobs, long-time CEO of technology giants Apple, has resigned. During his tenure, Apple’s contribution to the music industry has been enormous: the iPod, first launched in 2001, continues to lead the market for portable music players, just as its accompanying iTunes software remains a model example of successful online music distribution.Photo:Matt Yohe/Wikimedia

Apple’s 2002 purchase of software coders Emagic, meanwhile, would see the Californian company take over the development of Logic — now one of the most popular DAWs, and winner of the 2011 SOS Award for Best DAW Software. This move almost certainly precipitated the development of Apple’s entry-level Garage Band software, which is now bundled for free with every Apple computer sold, and is also available as an app for iOS devices. Never before have the tools to record and create music been so accessible.

“"I hereby resign as CEO of Apple,” reads Jobs’ statement. “I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as chairman of the board, director and Apple employee. As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.”
