AudioScape have announced a modern relaunch of Modular Audio Products, or MAP, a pro-audio company founded in the 1970s by a team of engineers working at Melcor. The first release to appear sporting the MAP name is the D.AM-27, a dual-channel preamp based on Melcor’s AM-27 design.
The D.AM-27 employs MAP 1731 discrete Class-A op-amps, which have been manufactured in-house by AudioScape and feature the same carbon resistors and transistors used in the original designs, coupled with a transformer-balanced output. As a result, the company say that the unit is like having a NOS AM-27 built 50 years ago, and boasts the unmistakable harmonic sheen and midrange richness of the sought-after unit.
As you’d expect from AudioScape, they’ve also taken the opportunity to add some new features to the classic design, brining it up to date and helping it to fit seamlessly into modern studio setups. Each channel is capable of delivering phantom power and comes equipped with switchable polarity reversal, low- and high-pass filters and a -20dB pad, as well as offering DI and line-level connections in addition to its mic input. Input gain and output level controls make it possible to maintain a sensible output level when driving the unit hard for effect, and a pair of LED meters provide a visual indication of the input gain.
