Softube’s latest collaboration with Weiss delivers a new multi-band dynamics plug-in that brings together five bands of processing based on the renowned Weiss DS1-MK3. As with it’s single-band predecessor, DS5 Multiband Compressor is a line-by-line code port of the original unit, but features a multiband design that goes far beyond the capabilities of the original.
The new plug-in is an evolution of Softube’s existing Weiss DS1-MK3 plug-in — reviewed here in SOS May 2019 — that offers five bands of dynamics processing ported directly from Weiss’ popular digital hardware unit. The companies say that DS5 offers complete control over each bands’ compression while delivering the transparency that made the original design so popular.
Thanks to a meticulous approach to filter design, Softube have apparently managed to reduce pre- and post-ringing artefacts to a “mathematical minimum”, while phase compensation can be activated in three different modes: Dynamic Phase, Static Phase, and Linear Phase. Dynamic Phase applies a minimal amount of phase shift only when gain changes occur, while Static Phase applies a constant phase shift independent of gain changes; both modes have been optimised for low-latency performance. Linear Phase, meanwhile, operates with zero phase shift regardless of any gain changes, but at the cost of increased latency times.
Despite its apparent complexity, Softube and Weiss say that the plug-in has been designed with ease of use in mind. Although each band is equipped with its own independent set of controls, DS5’s main page is occupied by a set of five macro controls that take charge of all five bands at once. It also comes loaded with a selection of presets designed by top mix and mastering engineers.
