Frankfurt 2008: Allen & Heath ZED Series (Video)

ZED 12FX & ZED 22FX
Allen & Heath have added two new products, the 12FX and 22FX, to their ZED range of compact mixers. The new models have very similar feature sets to the ZED 14 and ZED 24 respectively, including the built-in stereo USB audio interface, but they feature a stereo effects engine, making them more versatile for the live performer.

The ZED 12FX has six mono channels with line and mic inputs, three stereo line inputs, six auxiliary channels and a stereo master channel. Each mono input channel has a three-band EQ with swept mid-range band, an insert point and a long-throw fader, plus mute and pre-fade listen (PFL) buttons.

The ZED 22FX has the same feature set, plus an extra 10 mono channels, meaning it can accept 16 microphone signals and three stereo line inputs simultaneously.

The effects section on the new models comprises 16 separate effects, which have been created by Allen & Heath especially for the latest mixers. There’s the expected reverbs and delays, including various different reverb types and combination patches, plus more experimental flanger and chorus effects.

Each of the 16 settings have an editable parameter, written in brackets by the side of each patch on the top panel, and a tap button allows a tempo to be assigned to five of the effects. Usefully, there’s a jack socket for a footswitch that enables remote bypass of the entire effects section.

The ZED 12FX and ZED 22FX will be shipping this month, costing £434 and £629 respectively.
