GC Audio release Malcolm Toft Equate X

New preamp module for modular Inherit System

GC Audio Malcolm Toft Equate X

GC Audio have introduced the Malcolm Toft Equate X for their modular Inherit System, a new channel strip cartridge designed with the legendary recording engineer and console designer Malcolm Toft. GC's Inherit series allows users to quickly swap and change microphone preamps by plugging in one of a range of cartridges, each offering boutique recreations of iconic flavours of preamp. This release in collaboration with Malcolm Toft represents the latest addition to the growing line-up.

The Malcolm Toft Equate X module brings together three key processing stages: a full mic/line/instrument preamp with 66dB of gain, a six-band equaliser based on Toft’s classic Trident console designs and a newly designed dual-mode saturator, which is an exclusive feature to the Equate X. The cartridge is compatible with the GC Audio Inherit rack (reviewed in SOS Feb 2024) and has been designed as a comprehensive production channel.

Inherit System modules are hot‑swappable, meaning no patchbay, no swapping of cables or unplugging of mics, and no need to switch phantom power. You just pull out a cartridge, pop another in and listen.Inherit System modules are hot‑swappable, meaning no patchbay, no swapping of cables or unplugging of mics, and no need to switch phantom power. Equaliser controls include shelving EQs at 8kHz and 80Hz, parametric mids and sweepable high- and low-pass filters. The final saturation stage offers a choice between silicon diode clipping for a precise, modern tone or germanium for a more vintage, harmonically rich sound.
