The latest addition to Erica Synths ever-growing range of Eurorack modules sees the company collaborate once again with Hexinverter Électronique, this time redesigning another one of their popular drum modules. As its name suggests, Hexinverter Mutant Rimshot is a rimshot and clave generator, and draws inspiration from Roland’s iconic TR-909.
The module is an all-analogue affair, and features three switchable oscillator modes that can be used to generate two different rimshot sounds, as well as a clave sound that goes beyond what was on offer in the TR-909. Classic rimshot sounds can be achieved by switching the module to Hi mode, while a Lo option lowers the pitch range and allows the unit to stray into kick and tom territory. CLV (clave) then uses a single oscillator to produce a brighter, higher-pitched percussive sound. There’s a rear-panel switch that allows users to choose between Original and Extended pitch modes — the latter offers a wider range of sounds, but at the cost of moving further away from the authentic 909 recreation.
A multi-mode filter offers low-, band- and high-pass modes, helping users to shape a wide variety of sounds that go beyond its main purpose — Erica Synths say that turning the resonance up can generate some completely different percussive elements — and a VCF In connection makes it possible to blend in other sounds. A Mod Decay parameter controls the decay element of the module’s VCA envelope, and can also be used to modulate the filter cutoff thanks to a VCF Mod attenuverter. Another rear-panel switch also makes it possible to create FM-style sounds by allowing the internal pitch-controlled VCO to modulate the filter cutoff.
