Following three years of research and development, Modartt have announced the launch of the latest version of their hugely popular physically modelled software instrument. Said to be the most expressive and versatile iteration to date, Pianoteq 9 benefits from a newly designed audio engine, introduces a selection of new instruments and delivers significant improvements to the existing collection.
The new engine introduced with the latest version makes some improvements to the way in which the instrument models a piano’s soundboard, and is said to offer enhanced stereo and spatial perception. Expansion packs have been treated to some new content and upgrades, too. a new Italian Triple Harp has been added to the Harp Pack, while the existing Concert and Celtic Harps now boast improved transients; the MKII and Reeds offerings in the Electric Pianos pack have been tweaked to deliver a greater dynamic response and improved expressivity.
New Sombre presets have been added across all of the grand pianos, providing a softer tone that’s well suited to emotive and cinematic projects, and the intimate sound of the Felts preset is now available for the instrument’s historical pianos. Most instruments also now feature refreshed Binaural presets that offer a more immersive experience for headphone users. Some changes have also been made to the instrument’s GUI, with the Microphones panel now allowing up to eight microphones to be positioned in a 3D space, and an updated Mixing panel offering an intuitive set of controls for stereo and multi-channel outputs.

Pianoteq 9 is supported on PCs running Windows 7 or later, Macs running macOS 10.11 and above, and both x86 and ARM-based Linux machines. VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available, along with a standalone application.
