Molecular Bytes have recently released a new and improved version of their innovative reverb plug-in. Featuring a rebuilt processing engine and some powerful new features, AtomicReverb2 promises to take the detail and realism for which its predecessor was praised to a new level.
The company say that AtomicReverb2 focuses primarily on early reflections rather than the decay of the reverb — the opposite of the approach taken by many competing products. It’s an entirely algorithmic processor, although it’s been carefully modelled on impulse responses in an effort to ensure it produces accurate recreations of real-world spaces, while still offering more control than would be available with a convolution-based plug-in.
Despite that focus, there’s still plenty of control over the decay of the reverb. Everything is generated in real time, with the reverb tail subject to complex modulation and frequency-depending energy decay to create unique, evolving and natural-sounding reflections. Users are provided with a choice of three different tail models:
- Hard Room: Simulates spaces with strong, long-lasting reflections and clear geometric definition.
- Diffuse Room: An all-new mode that spreads reflections rapidly into a soft, airy decay — said to be ideal for modern mixes.
- Full-Dense: Creates an ultra-smooth decay with no distinct reflections at all — a ‘perfect’ reverb space that blends seamlessly with the source sound.
AtomicReverb2 includes some helpful onboard tools including a five-band EQ with a real-time spectrum analyser display, and tools for locking key parameters such as Dry/Wet, Gain and Density controls to maintain consistent settings when browsing through different presets. other handy extras include a built-in undo and redo functions and an A/B comparison tool.
Compatibility
AtomicReverb2 is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or higher, and Macs running macOS 10.14 and above. VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available.
Pricing & Availability
AtomicReverb2 is available now, and is currently (30 May 2025) being offered at an introductory price of €59, reduced from its full cost of €79. Those who own previous versions can currently upgrade for €29 (usually €39). A free trial version is available.
