The latest addition to Moog’s semi-modular line-up has just been announced, and promises to represent somewhat of a departure from their usual sound. Equipped with a new voice architecture with unique oscillators, a different filter topology, wavefolding and parallel processing, Labyrinth has been designed to provide users with an inspiring instrument that encourages experimentation.
Occupying the same 60HP format as the likes of the Mother 32, DFAM, Subharmonicon and Spectravox, the instrument can either function as a standalone unit or be used to form a larger system either with its siblings, or as part of a Eurorack rig. It’s said to be capable of creating everything from ambient soundscapes to dynamic rhythmic patterns, with its built-in patchbay facilitating a huge amount of modulation and connectivity options when paired with other modular gear.
Moog say that the instrument has been inspired by classic percussion synthesizers and modern generative techniques, and combines a newly designed voltage-controlled wavefolder with a state-variable filter, offering both additive and subtractive synthesis. Its dual sequencers are inspired by the shift register designs commonly found in Eurorack systems, offering intuitive and flexible control over melodic and rhythmic patterns.
SOS Review
A review of the Labyrinth will be appearing in the August 2024 issue of SOS (which is out on 18 July 2024). Until then, you can check out our reviews of some of Moog’s other semi-modular instruments via the links below.
“Labyrinth is designed to be an engine of sonic exploration. It allows users to create evolving sequences and rich timbres. It’s like having a compositional companion that navigates through a labyrinth of sound, constantly reconfiguring and surprising you with new sonic landscapes. ” Rick Carl, System Architect and Lead Hardware Engineer on Labyrinth
