The latest addition to Neve’s line-up makes the dynamics section from their flagship 88R console available in a significantly smaller, and much more affordable package. The 88C packs a pair of VCA compressors into a compact desktop enclosure, and is said to be the perfect companion for the company’s 88M audio interface, as well as functioning as a great standalone dynamics unit that can be powered via USB.
The two feed-forward compressor circuits used in the 88C are derived from the dynamics section found in each channel strip of the 88R, a console that’s earned a reputation for its smooth-sounding, musical compression. The company say that it delivers the signature Neve sound, enhancing clarity and ‘punch’ while maintaining the natural tone of the source material.
Each channel is equipped with Threshold, Makeup Gain, Ratio and Release parameters, and the device feature a Link switch that allows for either dual-mono or stereo operation. Ratios from 1:1 to full limiting are provided, while Adaptive Attack Technology means that the 88C’s attack time will be set automatically in response to incoming transients — users are able to shorten the time using a Fast Attack switch. Release time can be varied between 0.03 and three seconds, and there’s also a program-depended auto-release setting.
The unit also employs what Neve refer to as Anti-Breath Technology, which is said to prevent unwanted artifacts caused by sudden level drops. A choice of three side-chain filters allow users to fine-tune the compressors’ response, and true bypass switching makes it easy to switch the compression in and out to carry out A/B comparisons.
