When Polyverse launched their free Filtron plug-in in 2023, they described it as “the second filter in the Polyverse Filter Trilogy” — the first instalment being Supermodel, which we reviewed in SOS May 2023. Earlier in 2024, the company announced the launch of a public beta version of Filterverse, which has now been replaced by a full-release version.
The new flagship plug-in is said to be the most powerful and musical multi-mode filter available, and is capable of transforming any audio signal into a melody, beat or evolving soundscape. It’s a versatile beast that can be used to introduce subtle variation to tracks or change them into something new entirely, but despite its in-depth nature, Polyverse say that its intuitive interface ensures that it remains fun to use and is easy to explore for newcomers.
Filterverse features three filter slots that can be routed in a variety of serial and parallel combinations, and are each capable of hosting one of 25 different filter types. Classic analogue synth-inspired designs are joined by complex multi-peak, comb and fractal options, some of which offer features such as saturation and self-oscillation, while others have been designed with a focus on “pristine sonic fidelity”. Despite the plug-in’s name, there are some “non-filter filters” included, with the likes of a coil spring model, bit-crusher and amp simulator joined by modules capable of producing tempo-sync’ed delays and expansive reverbs.
Much of the plug-in’s power lies in its modulation system, which provides users with a total of eight sources that include a flexible step sequencer, an ADSR envelope and a randomiser, all designed to bring the built-in effects to life through the creation of rhythmic, melodic patterns. A Meta Knob feature allows multiple parameters to be controlled with a single twist, making quick work of turning static drones and pads into evolving sounds, beats or melodies. Parameters can be controlled or ‘played’ in real time from a DAW’s MIDI track or a hardware controller/sequencer thanks to MIDI and CV inputs, and it’s possible to switch presets via keyswitches or MIDI CC messages — a handy feature for those wishing to use Filterverse as part of a live performance.
