In November 2023, Roland introduced an EX Upgrade option that allowed Fantom users to expand their instrument’s capabilities. Now, the company have announced the launch of the Fantom EX, which replace the current flagship workstation models and deliver all of the new features out of the box.
Three new models will replace the existing line-up: the Fantom 6 EX, Fantom 7 EX and Fantom 8 EX, which offer 61-, 76- and 88-note versions respectively. As with the models they replace, the 6 EX and 7 EX are each equipped with a semi-weighted synth-action keybed, while the 8 EX boasts a weighted hammer-action variant. Powered by custom processors, all three models are packed with dozens of effects that include new reverbs and an updated master effects section, and also house an analogue filter that can be used to bring some additional character to the table.
The EX range comes loaded with the most extensive collection of sound engines found in the series to date, including Roland’s ACB (Analog Circuit Behaviour), ZEN-Core, V-Piano, SuperNATURAL, and Virtual ToneWheel offerings. A set of 11 sound expansions comes loaded as standard, with synths including the Jupiter-8, SH-101 and Juno-106 joined by instruments such as the SuperNATURAL Acoustic Piano 3, with yet more available as optional add-ons via Roland Cloud.
As you’d expect, you still get an array of hands-on controls, with the touchscreen-based interface joined by a collection of faders, encoders, buttons and drum pads, along with onboard sequencing, recording and editing functionality. Extensive audio MIDI and CV/gate connectivity allows the Fantom to be integrated with a huge range of other instruments and equipment, and it can also form the heart of a studio setup thanks to a built-in USB audio/MIDI interface.
