New models announced: 2035, 2050, 4021 & 4022
Audio-Technica had four new mics on display at the Summer NAMM show: two large-diaphragm condensers in the budget-friendly 20 series, and two small-diaphragm models for the higher-end 40 series. Here's a run down of their features.
The 2035 is a large-diaphragm condenser that's designed as an all-purpose mic. It has a fixed-cardioid polar pattern and a 10dB pad, and ships with a shockmount. The manufacturers say that it has a very low self-noise figure of 12dB and, with its pad switched in, it can cope with SPLs of up to 158dB. It's set to cost $249 when it becomes available in August.
The 2050 is the first multi-pattern mic in Audio Technica's 20 series. It features omnidirectional, cardioid and figure-of-eight polar patterns, a low-cut filter (which filters below 80Hz at 12dB per octave), and a -10dB pad. Like the 2035, it can handle very high SPLs (up to 159dB in this case) so it can be used safely on drum overheads and suchlike. It will retail for $369 when it hits the shops in August.
The two new additions to the 40 series are both small-diaphragm condensers with on-board 10dB attenuators and low-cut filters. The only difference between them being their polar pattern: the 4021 is a cardioid mic, while the 4022 is omnidirectional. Both will be shipping in September for $495 each.
