Montréal-based THD Labs are well known for their Tangerine system, an innovative combination of hardware and software that makes it possible to add modern flying-fader automation to a range of vintage studio consoles. At NAMM 2025 they were showcasing their latest offering, Tangerine METERZ, a high-resolution LED metering system designed to replace a console’s traditional VU meters.
Each Tangerine METERZ module provides two channels of metering, and supports a wide range of standards including VU, Bargraph, ITU-1770 (LUFS and True Peak), along with phase and spectral metering — the company are already working on an update that will introduce multi-channel support for Dolby Atmos. The hardware units communicate with a DAW via a dedicated plug-in, which allows users to synchronise the labelling and meter type on a per-session basis.
The modules have been designed as a drop-in replacement for the meters used in SSL’s 4000, 6000, 8000 and 9000 J- and K-series consoles, and so do not need to be installed by a specialised technician. The company are able to manufacture custom units to fit other consoles, and are also working on OEM solutions for a range of other console manufacturers.
