NAMM 2012: SE Electronics SE2200A II

Multi-pattern condenser microphone

SE Electronics will be attending the upcoming NAMM show in LA to debut their brand new mic, the SE2200A II — an update to the SE2200A, which is apparently the best-selling mic in the UK! Unlike the previous version, the SE2200A II offers a choice of three polar patterns: omnidirectional, cardioid and figure-of-eight. It achieves these by using a modified version of the SE2200A’s one-inch, single-diaphragm capsule. In the new version, two diaphragms are placed back to back (in a Braunmühl-Weber configuration), with the different pickup patterns being achieved by summing and/or polarity inverting the outputs of the two diaphragms.

The mic is finished in the same black rubber paint that graces many of SE’s new products (including the Rupert Neve-designed microphones and the Egg monitors). Apparently, this finish helps to reduce chassis resonances.

Due to be available from this month, the SE2200A II will ship with a matching rubberised shockmount, and a pop filter that conveniently bolts on to the shockmount’s ring. More information, including detailed technical specifications and pricing, will be announced at the NAMM show.
