Ardour v2.7 SAE Edition

Download now for free!

A Macintosh-compatible version of Ardour, the open-source DAW application originally designed for Linux, has been made available for free download. The School of Audio Engineering (SAE), who became a corporate sponsor of the project in April 2007, have posted a link to the installation file on their web site, following months of development that sees Ardour come up against the big players in the DAW market.

The version they’ve released to the public is the ‘SAE edition’ of Ardour, one that the developers say will “make the open-source digital audio workstation even more accessible to beginners”.

Apart from the expected audio recording, mixing and editing functions expected of a modern DAW package, Ardour has tools that can analyse and tighten-up percussive material (called Rhythm Ferret!), and it comes with time-stretching and pitch-shifing facilities. Of course, the biggest selling point (if you can call it that) is that it’s completely free, unlike the majority of other DAWs. Why not give it a go?

For more information about Ardour, head to the official web site. To download the application (a mere 23MB), visit www.sae.edu/ardour. Bear in mind that you'll need an Apple Mac with an Intel processor to run it.
