Atrium is the debut release from recently established developer Convex Audio, and has been designed to provide an “innovative and holistic solution to reverberation, stereo positioning and depth perception”. Available exclusively for Windows as a VST3 plug-in, the processor combines a high-quality acoustic simulation engine with an intuitive GUI, and allows users to create a whole host of simulated spaces.
The plug-in is said to offer a blend of high-quality, realistic-sounding reverbs and more experimental effects, but despite its versatility, still manages to offer a shallow learning curve. A set of Width, Height and Length parameters range from 1 to 100 metres, making it possible to simulate a huge range of physical spaces, while their overall sound can be fine-tuned using Reflectivity, Density and Damping controls; there are also a set of options for adjusting the amount of early reflections and the room’s overall character.
It’s not just the reverb itself that benefits from in-depth tuning: Atrium also offers comprehensive control over where sources and listeners are placed within the virtual space. Sources and listeners can be quickly positioned by moving ear and speaker icons around in the plug-in’s centre section, and thanks to a Synchronisation button, it’s possible to route sources from up to 16 tracks and have settings shared among them and remain continually updated.
Atrium also includes the following handy extras:
- Multi-level Preset Manager that comes with a variety of great-sounding rooms of different shapes and sizes.
- Resizable GUI to accommodate different screen sizes and preferences.
- Three parametric filters for colouring and resonance control, as well as reverb pitch modulation for more creative purposes.
- Self-documented user interface. Hover your mouse over any control element and a tooltip at the bottom of the screen gives a brief explanation of what that control element does.
- Randomise button for instant and easy inspiration and experimentation.
