Software update brings further plug-ins to UAD platform
The latest software update for the UAD DSP plug-in hosting platform has been announced. Version 5.3 includes new plug-ins, but also marks the beginning of the end of development of software for the UAD1 card.
Cooper Time Cube MkII (below) is an emulation of a bizarre piece of studio hardware from the early 1970s. The original hardware unit involved two long pieces of hose pipe, down which sound was sent, creating the pre-delay for the mechanical reverbs of the time. (Sounds like another SOS April fool!)
Of course, this could be easily replicated in even the most basic modern software delay, but Universal Audio say that Cooper Time Cube MkII for UAD “retains the all-important mechanical delay sound of the original hardware”, while “offering all the necessary features expected from a modern delay device”, such as tempo sync and separately automatable delay lines.
Cooper Time Cube MkII requires the latest generation of UAD processing hardware on which to run, and is the first of Universal Audio’s ‘powered plug-ins’ to only run on the UAD2. It costs $149 (£105) and is available now.
Also part of the v5.3 release is a suite of plug-ins that model the channel strip and bus compressor sections from a popular British console (it may be clear from the screenshot shown here). UAD 4K Channel Strip and UAD 4K Bus Compressor work on both UAD1 and UAD2 DSP cards, and cost $249 (£175 at the time of writing) and $199 (£139) respectively.
