iRing from IK Multimedia brings gesture control to iOSIK Multimedia expand their range of iOS device accessories with a motion controller for music apps called iRing.
The iRing allows you to control sound effects and a plethora of other parameters in real time, using hand positions, meaning there's no need to touch the screen.
The iRing system uses of a pair of futuristic-looking double-sided rings with markings on, your device's front-facing camera and IK Multimedia apps to calculate the exact position of each hand in 3D space. The rings themselves are worn between two fingers and IK Multimedia claim that they are comfortable enough to be worn while playing musical instruments or using conventional controllers.
The iRing has a different pattern on each side, allowing up to six parameters to be controlledBecause of the iRing's design, up to six parameters can be controlled at once with one- or two-hand gestures, and the high-contrast dots on each side can be read in a wide range of lighting conditions.
The two free apps that work in conjunction with the rings are iRing Music Maker and iRing FX/Controller. While the former is aimed at music lovers rather than skilled musicians, the latter is squarely aimed at producers, DJs and musicians.
Position information from the rings is converted into MIDI control data by iRing FX/Controller and can be used by any compatible Core MIDI app, or even a computer connected with Wi-fi. The same app doubles as an audio effects processor with 16 effects including delay, compression, fuzz, reverb, stutter and auto wah. This can be inserted into the audio path for use with any music app that is Audiobus or Inter-App Audio compatible.
The same technology will be incorporated in IK Multimedia's other apps such as AmpliTube and VocaLive, and third-party developers are encouraged to use the technology with their own software, for music and other applications.
Retailing for $25/€20 (excluding taxes), the iRing system is a low-cost way of adding gesture control to your music production system.
