Major update gets a warm reception
The Muse Receptor has been leader of the pack in the stand-alone plug-in player market for some years now. But, despite regular developments by the designers, the 2U rackmountable device had started to look underpowered compared to competing products.
So Muse have announced the Receptor 2, which features double the processor speed, triple the hard disc bandwidth, and a ten-fold increase in the on-board network speed, compared to the original model. On the new Receptor, there’s 50 percent more memory, running twice as fast as it was on the original, and the device runs on software that has been streamlined from the ground up, to increase its performance.
Two versions of the Receptor 2 are available: Pro and Pro Max. The Pro model is aimed at performers who need to be able to switch between sample patches at the touch of a button, and run processor-intensive audio processors with minimum fuss.
The Receptor Pro Max is designed for composers who need lots of space for orchestral libraries and the like. It’s got a giant 1TB (that’s 1000GB) hard drive, and has the facility to connect to eSATA drive arrays. What’s more, Muse’s Uniwire technology lets users off-load processor-hungry tasks from their DAW to the Receptor, when the going gets really tough!
Both new models can be rackmounted, just like the previous Receptors. But aesthetically they’re different, with a blue-backlit LCD and power LED, a sleek, grey front panel and milled aluminium knobs. They both come with a suite of factory sounds, featuring patches from the Plugsound Box collection that includes everything from GM sounds to top-notch performance keyboards. The Muse Receptor 2 Pro costs $2599 (£1740 at the time of writing); the Pro Max is $3199 (around £2140).
