Summer NAMM: Toft Audio A Range (Video)

Dual-channel Mic Preamp & EQ
The latest product from Toft Audio is the A Range, a 2U, two-channel rackmountable preamplifier and EQ that's based on the original Trident Audio Developments console of the same name.

Thanks to a faithful recreation by Malcolm Toft, who co-designed the original console, the new product uses the same Sowter transformers on the input, output and mic preamp stages as featured on the original console, and uses inductance coils in the EQ circuits, a feature that the manufacturers say gives a very coloured and characterful sound.

Each channel on the A Range has a four-band EQ (which can be bypassed), and each band has four fixed frequencies. Horizontal sliders can boost or cut each band by 15dB, and high- and low-pass filters can be engaged, again with a choice of fixed frequencies. What's more, external processors can be inserted into the signal path, so you could send the signal from the A Range to a compressor, for example.

The Toft Audio A Range is due to cost $3000 in the US, and should be shipping by October. Check out the video below for more.
