Wolff Audio reveal FREQ 500-series EQ

Includes switchable per-band filter modes

Wolff Audio FREQ 500-series proportional Q EQ analogue outboard hardware

The latest addition to Wolff Audio’s line-up is a 500-series module that aims to offer the best features of a proportional-Q equaliser, but with some additional controls that make it more versatile than many of its rivals. Created by the company’s co-founder Paul Wolff, the FREQ aims to combine the qualities of classic EQs with the improved accuracy and flexibility of modern designs.

The module features four bands of EQ that are each offer ±15dB of gain and are equipped with a sweepable frequency control, with their bandwidth narrowing as their cut or boost values are increased. The high and low bands are kitted out with a Wide button that swaps the proportional-Q behaviour for a three-octave-wide fixed filter that rolls off gradually at each end, while the two mid bands feature a 1/3 Octave switch that allows for more precise notching at lower gain values. As with all of the company’s offerings, the module employs high-quality components throughout its signal path, including a custom Cinemag output transformer designed to minimise colouration.

“With the FREQ, we set out to create an EQ that’s purposefully built and intuitive to use so as not to get in the way of a mix, but add to its flow. The less time you waste when making a record, the better. With the turn of a knob, the FREQ’s responsiveness is incredibly apparent. It can be aggressive or it can be subtle — sharper and pointed, or wide and smooth. The FREQ imparts an understated characteristic that acts as a ‘glue’, similar to working on an analogue console, while leaving the overall colour of a mix up to the engineer’s creative preferences. It really is the ‘everything’ EQ.” - Paul Wolff, Co-Founder, Wolff Audio
