The latest arrival to the Positive Grid line-up is said to be the first fully generative guitar-tone design software powered by AI. Project: BIAS X promises to transform the way that guitarists and producers craft, explore and refine their sound thanks to some innovative Text- and Music-to-Tone prompting modes.
Available as a DAW plug-in and standalone application, the new offering aims to allow users to progress from an abstract idea to a mix-ready tone within moments. It combines Positive Grid’s expertise in amp and effects modelling with the latest advancements in machine learning and circuit-level modelling, and is said to go way beyond traditional modelling solutions, reproducing complex interactions between components that define the sound of analogue gear. Over 200 amps were analysed during the software’s development, and the company say that the resulting DSP engine is capable of delivering the same feel and dynamic response as real hardware.
Tone Creation
BIAS X is powered by an AI model that ‘understands’ tone in the same way as a musician, and allows users to craft high-quality sounds using some innovative methods:
- Text-to-Tone: Create tones from descriptive prompts such as favourite artists or songs, genre styles, or even abstract feelings
- Music-to-Tone: Upload audio clips to recreate tones via real-time AI analysis
- AI Refinement: Request live edits like “more bite”, “less fuzz”, or “add crunch”.
Amps, Cabs & Effects
The software captures a wealth of high-end gear, and includes:
- 33 Advanced AI-powered Amp Models: The advanced sound engine analyses preamps, power amps and transformers. It captures circuit-level dynamics like transformer sag and power amp response to deliver models with authentic compression, harmonic richness and dynamic response that traditional modelling can’t match.
- 63 Versatile Effects: Built with component-level modelling. Each effect utilises Agentic DSP trained on vintage analogue gear to recreate the subtle non-linear behaviours and dynamic sensitivity that give classic pedals their distinctive character.
- All-New Cabinet Simulation: Developed by Positive Grid engineers and in partnership with Spectre Digital, featuring high-fidelity IRs of legendary cabs and mics.
- IR Loader: Load and blend two custom user IRs for flexible, fully tailored cabinet tones.
- Build Anything: Mix and match any amp, cab and effect to create a custom dream rig.
User Interface
BIAS X features a drag-and-drop interface that eliminates the need for menu-diving and offers a clean, intuitive workspace. Everything has been designed for users to get up and running quickly, but there are plenty of in-depth editing options for those wishing to dig a little deeper:
- Dual Signal Chains: Split the signal and process it in two parallel paths, each with its own effects. Stack or pan them for wide, layered or contrasting tones.
- Drag-and-Drop Workflow: Rearrange amps, cabs and effects visually and instantly — build a chain in seconds.
- Streamlined Preset Manager: Organise and recall tones fast with an overhauled interface built for clarity.
- Flexible Routing Matrix: Experiment with parallel paths, stereo splits and creative FX placement. Turn on the global Doubler effect to double the signal for added width.
- Smooth Real-Time Control: BIAS X offers an intuitive, easy-to-use signal path interface. Move components horizontally or toggle them vertically to adjust gear placement on the fly.
- Revamped Gear Browser: Browse, compare and swap gear with a faster, more intuitive experience.
Compatibility
BIAS X is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or higher, and Macs running macOS 11.7 and above. VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available, along with a standalone application.
Pricing and Availability
BIAS X is available now, priced at $149£139. An upgrade price of $99£89 is available for registered owners of qualifying Positive Grid Spark and BIAS products. More information can be found on the Positive Grid website. Prices include VAT.
