Elektron have launched a reimagined version of their popular FM instrument which they say takes its synthesis and sequencing capabilities to new heights. Expanding on the capabilities of its predecessor — which we reviewed in SOS September 2018 — the Digitone II is a multi-timbral affair equipped with 16 tracks, 16 voices, a whole host of filters, effects and modulation capabilities, and of course, the company’s renowned sequencer.
Synth Engines & Tracks
The instrument comes loaded with four synth engines, each offering their own distinct character and boasting a wealth of tweakable parameters. First up is Wavetone, which offers a fresh take on the classic 2-oscillator synthesizer and is capable of morphing between oscillator shapes, adding phase distortion and introducing oscillator modulation. Swarmer then brings some powerful-sounding super-saws to the table, while FM Tone delivers the FM tones the original instrument is known for. Finally, FM Drum makes it possible to craft everything from percussive smacks and booms to interesting melodic phrases.
Filters, Modulation & Effects
Elektron say that the Digitone II is a box with modularity at its core, with a flexible architecture that provides users with the freedom to experiment with a variety of different sound engines, filters, effects and modulation options. Comb- and Comb+ filter modes are joined by Multi-mode, EQ, Lowpass 4, and Legacy LP/HP variants, and the base-width filter can now be placed before the main filter section or at the end of the audio track’s signal chain.
Each voice benefits from its own dedicated amp envelope that includes both an ADSR mode for increased control and clarity, along with an AHD mode designed for working with percussive sounds. Plenty of modulation is on offer thanks to three LFOs (per voice) that can be assigned to an array of destinations.
Sequencer
Elektron instruments are well known for their powerful sequencing capabilities, and the Digitone II is no exception. Its 16 tracks are each capable of hosting any of the onboard synth engines or MIDI, and offer 128 steps along with a comprehensive selection of Parameter Lock functions and live recording capabilities. There’s a Euclidean sequencer mode for creating mathematically-driven sequences, while per-step conditions, adjustable probabilities and retrig functions offer a huge range of pattern variation.
Pricing & Availability
The Digitone II is available now, priced at $999£899 including VAT / €1049.
