IK Multimedia have announced the release of the UNO Synth PRO X, a paraphonic analogue synthesizer that packs three oscillators, two filters, a 64-step sequencer, built-in effects and more into a compact, portable chassis that weighs less than a kilo.
Oscillators & Filters
The instrument is equipped with three discrete wave-morphing oscillators that offer PWM, sync, ring modulation and FM capabilities. Hands-on controls are provided for each key function, with a selector switch determining which oscillator the panel controls are currently assigned to. Two analogue filters follow, one of which is an OTA-based high- or low-pass type, whilst the second is a two- or four-pole SSI-based low-pass variant.
Envelopes, LFOs & FX
The next section then houses three ADSR envelopes, a pair of LFOs and a set of controls for the instrument’s built-in effects. Dedicated Modulation, Reverb and Delay slots allow up to three effects to be used simultaneously, and there are a total of ten to choose from, including a chorus and uni-vibe, five different delays and Hall, Plate and Shimmer reverb modes. Additionally, the PRO X also boasts a separate analogue overdrive.
The onboard 64-step sequencer offers per-step recording of up to 48 parameters, and can be set to Legato, Mono and Paraphonic modes, as well as a new Bassline option. A Sequence Randomizer function allows the sequencer to automatically generate sequences that follow a user-selected scale, and there is also an arpeggiator with 10 different modes.
In terms of I/O, the instrument’s main balanced outputs are provided on quarter-inch TRS connectors, whilst six 3.5mm mini-jack sockets offer a pair of CV/Gate inputs and outputs, a mono audio input and a stereo headphone output. Despite its size, the PRO X manages to provide MIDI I/O on five-pin DIN sockets.
A USB-C socket then offers MIDI connectivity with a computer, as well as allowing the instrument to connect to the included Editor/Librarian software, which can be used as a standalone application, or as a DAW plug-in. When being used as the latter, it is possible to program and play the PRO X as if it were a virtual instrument. Although the device can be bus-powered, IK Multimedia recommend using the provided power supply where possible due to the minimum 5V / 1.5A power requirement.
