NP A67 from KIT Plugins

Emulates Norman Petty Studios’ custom Altec 1567A mixer

KIT Plugins NP A67 Norman Petty Studios Altec 1567A valve tube mixer preamp

Following on from their recent news of a new partnership with Norman Petty Studios, KIT Plugins have revealed the first plug-in to sport the iconic facilities name. NP A67 emulates the studio’s modified Altec 1567A valve mixer and preamp unit, delivering an authentic recreation of its musical saturation and natural-sounding compression.

The 1567A is a rackmounted valve-based mixer that was originally designed as a radio station preamp, and was repurposed by Norman Petty in the late 1950s to form part of a custom studio console. Petty used three such units — heavily modified with discrete solid-state circuitry — for L/C/R signal paths. The studio is credited as the birthplace of the ‘Clovis Sound’ made famous by early recordings of artists such as Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison and many more.

As promised in their initial announcement, the new plug-in is the first in a series of collaborations between KIT Plugins and Norman Petty Studios, which is set to include an array of processing plug-ins and virtual instruments.

Key Features

  • Valve Saturation & Drive: Input controls emulate valve distortion when pushed toward 0 dB, mirroring the natural compression of the original mixers.
  • Analogue Texture: Optional hum recreates generator noise from vintage components.
  • EQ Additions: While the bass and treble mimic vintage tone stacks, the midrange peaking band is a modern tweak introduced to augment tonal shaping without deviating from the original unit’s character.
  • Flexible Filters: HP (High-Pass) and LP (Low-Pass) Filters allow users to focus or tame a signal’s frequency content.

Compatibility

NP A67 is supported on PCs running Windows 7 or higher, and Macs running  macOS 10.14 and above. VST3, AU and AAX plug-in formats are available.

Pricing & Availability

NP A67 is available now, priced at $49.
