Oktoberfest for Bands!
BAND HEAVEN IN BIRMINGHAM
The decibel level will be going through the roof in Birmingham thanks to the annual Music Live show — a veritable extravaganza of the newest, loudest and downright bestest gear the musical instrument industry has to offer (and a lot more besides). Other than the wealth of exhibitors, this four-day Musicians’ Heaven boasts seminars (of which more in a sec), clinics, a live stage and — possibly the best bit — discounts on equipment. Yup, you heard us right.
The show kicks off on November 3rd and runs until the 5th at the mighty NEC exhibition centre and, naturally enough, Music Mart will be kicking out the jams alongside the rest of you on stand CR12 so make sure you drop by to say howdy, pass on a demo, have a cuppa tea and nerd out with some of the biggest music geeks the world has to offer (receding hairline and beer belly optional).
Music Mart editor John Moore will be on hand to present a seminar on the basics of PA for live bands. He’ll be looking at how to choose a system that’s right for you and how to get the best out of it once you’ve splashed the cash, cutting through a fair bit of crap along the way, so make sure you don’t miss it.
What’s more, if you’re about on Education day — aka Friday 3rd — Music Mart highly recommends you check out metal fiends Breed 77 on the live stage, then read our interview with the boys on page 74 of our November issue, before proceeding to the Music Mart stand (CR12) to get up close and personal with the band. They’ll be hanging out with us from 3pm, so form an orderly queue…
MUSIC MART PLAYS MUSICAL CHAIRS AT IN THE CITY
In The City, the UK’s biggest and best unsigned band and music industry expo is descending on Manchester for its annual showcase this October. By day, ITC hosts seminars and debates from some of the biggest names in the business and by night, takes over every conceivable stage in Manchester city centre for a veritable orgy of live music.
Two thousand music biz types, 600 bands and a small army of gig goers will be in attendance to sniff out the artists that’ll be rocking the nation’s charts, airwaves, dancefloors and mosh pits over the next 12 months — and Music Mart will be right at the heart of the action.
We’ll be showing off 20 of the best underground and unsigned artists the UK has to offer at our two-day gig-stravaganza as well as answering every conceivable music-related question you can chuck in our direction at the very special Music Mart Musical Chairs.
You’ve heard of speed dating, well now you can speed network: for three hours, Music Mart’s Musical Chairs will see us host a mammoth one on one questions and answers session so you, the band, can pick the brains of an array of music industry insiders.
Here’s the deal: we fill a room with music industry experts from A&R to live sound know-it-alls to media maestros to cunning management to production whizzes and much more besides, each of whom has their own mini-stand from which to solve your queries, while the DJ pumps out the finest new music in the background. You’ve got one song to ask as many questions as you possibly can before the record changes and you move on to the next expert. The DJ keeps playing and you keep moving on until you get to the end of the line, jam packed full of all the sharpest tips and tactics to get your band noticed. Genius? We think so.
All our events are free entry, so get yourself down to Bridgewater Hall on Saturday 28th for the aforementioned Music Mart Musical Chairs, and The Walkabout, 13 Quay St, from 12.30pm on Sunday 29th October and 7pm on Monday 30th October for a dose of live unsigned action.
