Klevgrand have announced the release of Speldosa, a new virtual instrument developed in a collaboration with Martin Molin of Wintergatan, a Swedish band renowned for their use of unconventional instruments, some of which have been designed and built by the band members themselves.
Speldosa meticulously samples a custom music box instrument built by Martin, a creation which has formed the sonic signature of two of his bands, Detektivbyrån and Wintergatan. Through the collaboration with Klevgrand, the mechanical instrument has been captured and transformed into a playable digital instrument with a clean and simple GUI.
Four different playing modes are included: Modern, Vintage, Antique and Eternal, with the last created using reversed samples, and users are able to tailor the sound of the instrument using two different built-in room simulations and an algorithmic reverb.
Take a look at the video below to hear the original instrument being played alongside the Modulin, another of Martin’s creations which couples a ribbon controller with a selection of Eurorack synthesizer modules.
“From the moment I created this music box sound, I have always wanted to share it. It’s been a dream of mine to put the sound into the hands of musicians and producers everywhere and see what music they would make with it”. – Martin Molin, Wintergatan
