Lauten Audio’s latest announcement sees the company expand their range of dedicated drum mics with a new model designed specifically for placement inside of a kick drum. Joining the Tom Mic and Snare Mic, and sharing their refreshingly logical naming convention, the Kick Mic promises to deliver instant attack, clarity and defined low-end power while avoiding common pitfalls such as bleed and low-frequency build-up.
Based around the company’s new KC608 capsule, the Kick Mic has been created from the ground up for use inside of a kick drum. Its physical design helps to combat air turbulence, allowing the mic to ‘breathe’ and avoiding being overloaded with low-frequency energy. The company say that the approach results in a “high-impact, chest-pounding sonic experience with unmatched clarity and presence”. It also boasts a tightly controlled polar pattern that retains its cardioid response down to 50Hz, reducing the prominence of phase issues that can be caused by reflections from the inside of the drum shell.
Some onboard tonal-shaping options are provided by a pair of integrated filters. There’s a high-pass that can be engaged at 80 or 140 Hz, keeping the low end under control whilst helping to increase midrange attack, along with a low-pass at 5 or 12 kHz that can help to reduce unwanted high-frequency content and tackle bleed. As for placement, the mic’s compact design is complemented by a locking swivel mount that provides over 180 degrees of angular adjustment, and is also compatible with a wide range of internal mounting hardware.
Key Features
- Built for use inside kick drums.
- New KC608 capsule provides instant attack, focused low-end and a powerful midrange, all phase aligned for accurate results even under extreme EQ and compression applications.
- Polar pattern retention down to 50Hz maintains each bass drum’s unique character while eliminating the low-frequency buildup and phase interference that’s common in traditional microphones.
- Hybrid through-hole and surface-mount circuitry maximises transient detail without sacrificing depth and musicality.
- Noise-rejecting design minimises unwanted drum and cymbal bleed, improving mix clarity.
- Tour-ready design delivers consistent sound night after night.
- Acoustically engineered to manage internal air turbulence while preserving the natural timbre and dynamics of a kick drum.
- Integrated filter system for quick tonal adjustments without external processing
- Compact size with 180° swivel mount for optimal positioning in tight spaces
- Compatible with most internal kick-drum mounting systems
