Lauten Audio’s latest release aims to combine the isolation and flexibility of a premium mic stand with the convenience and portability of a rim-mounted clip system, while also eliminating the common pitfalls of both. The appropriately titled Rim Mount offers a hard-wearing, versatile solution for miking up the likes of snares and toms, and boasts an innovative design that makes quick work of getting the mic in the right place, and more importantly, making sure it stays there!
The clamp that attaches the Rim Mount to the drum employs a layer of shock-absorbent material that provides the decoupling benefits of a mic stand, helping to avoid the transmission of vibrations. Its shape has been designed to avoid contact with the drum head or shell, circumventing any tuning issues or scratches. The mic itself is then fixed to an articulated arm, which offers a wide range of movement and locks firmly into place using a single level.
The Rim Mount has, of course, been designed with Lauten’s own drum microphones in mind, and so works perfectly when paired up with the Snare Mic or Tom Mic models — both of which were reviewed in the September 2024 issue of SOS (print / web / app / replica / PDF editions). But the compatibility isn’t exclusive, and the company say that it will easily hold a wide range of other popular choices, including larger alternatives such as an SM57, MD421 or C414, among others.
