The latest mic from Warm Audio adds another vintage-inspired model to the company’s ever-expanding line-up, and this time it’s the turn of the Electro-Voice 664. The Retro 64 adopts the distinctive design of the original, but features a custom-tuned capsule which the company say has been engineered with modern front-of-house environments in mind.
The newly designed dynamic capsule has been tuned for live sound duties, and promises to deliver a clear and usable upper-midrange while rolling off excess high frequencies in order to reduce feedback and ‘harshness’. It’s also said to boast excellent noise rejection and strong off-axis control, as well as offering reliable performance in loud environments — an internal shockmount helps protect the capsule from handling noise and general “stage abuse”, ensuring consistent results on the road. The Retro 64 is apparently equally at home on an array of sources including vocals, guitar cabinets, snare, toms and other acoustic instruments.
“We’re excited to extend our dynamic mic line-up with this new addition. The Retro 64 was a fun project, requested by some of our key partners who wanted to see the vibe of this retro design come back to the stage. The design is a classic, but we knew we wanted to deliver a modern sound so we custom-tuned a dynamic capsule purpose-built for today’s live sound environments. It captures the visual vibe of a classic 1960s microphone but instantly fits into any FOH setup with clarity, consistency and none of the squeal or harshness that plagues engineers. It’s designed to feel immediately familiar to engineers while offering performers a mic that looks as good as it sounds.” - Bryce Young, President, Warm Audio
