UAD 9.6 includes tube channel strip, Suhr Amp & Putnam's mics

Four plug-ins included in latest Universal Audio update

The latest update to the Universal Audio Powered Plug-in platform includes four new titles: the UA-developed Century Tube Channel Strip as well as Suhr PT100 Amplifier, the Brainworx bx_masterdesk and Bill Putnam Microphone Collection all from direct developer partners.

Promising colourful tones, the Century channel strip is a Unison-enabled plug-in, meaning it can be used in real-time when recording with an Apollo or Arrow interface. It features a preamp section inspired by tube consoles, a three-band EQ with high- and low-shelving tone controls and a sweepable mid-range, along with a single-knob optical-style compressor. Developed by Universal Audio, the new plug-in will cost $149 and is designed to suit vocal and instrument sources.

The Suhr PT100 Unison-enabled plug-in ($149) is the result of a five-year collaboration between vaunted amp designer John Suhr and world-renowned guitarist/tone aficionado Pete Thorn (Chris Cornell, Melissa Etheridge). This is a hot-rodded software recreation of Suhr’s original PT100 design, featuring a custom “Plexi-style” output transformer, four EL-34 power tubes, and six 12AX7 preamp tubes under the hood. Three channels are on offer, each with a distinctive tone: American, British, and high-gain modded British. Three-band EQ and Crunch, Boost, and Bright switches are available for each channel. Unique Custom Feedback, Presence, and Depth controls also allow adjustment of amplifier response.

Though tracking is possible thanks to Unison-enabled interfaces with impedance matching, the Suhr PT100 also sports a 'Plug-in only' FX Rack for host-syncable lo-fi delay, noise gate, tight and smooth filters and power soak, as well as preamp and power amp bypass switches.

On the mastering side, the Brainworx  bx_masterdesk plug-in ($299) offers a complete, field-tested chain of high-end analogue-style mastering tools in a simple, easy to use interface. The bx_masterdesk features multiple levels of EQ and compression, plus M/S processing, bass management, and stereo enhancement. With its low DSP footprint (allowing processing with a single DSP chip), intuitive layout, and comprehensive processing chain, the bx_masterdesk plug-in aims to provide an all-in-one mastering suite for songwriters, bands, and professional engineers alike.

Finally, a collaboration with Townsend Labs rounds out the UAD 9.6 software complement. Designed to work with the Sphere L22 mic, the Bill Putnam Mic Collection ($249) provides access to exacting emulations of rare, vintage mics which have been used to record countless iconic artists of the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s, including Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, The Beach Boys, and more. These mic emulations are designed to nail the classic timbres of iconic mics such as the Telefunken Ela M 251E, AKG C12A, Neumann U47, RCA 44, and also faithfully model the transient response, harmonics, proximity effect and three-dimensional polar response of the original mics.
