Wes Audio unveil Pandora 500-series module

Multi-band compressor joins Next Generation (ng) family

Wes Audio Pandora 500‑series outboard analogue multi-band compressor module digital recall

Wes Audio are well known for their Next Generation (ng) family, which comprises a whole host of rackmount and 500‑series processors that combine all-analogue signal paths with comprehensive digital control and DAW integration. The latest addition to the line-up, the Pandora, is a three-slot 500‑series module that offers something that’s fairly scarce in the analogue world: multi-band compression.

Hardware

The module packs in three bands of compression, each equipped with their own independent threshold, ratio, output, attack and release settings, as well as a THD switch that introduces some additional harmonic distortion. A pair of rotary encoders make it possible to set crossover frequencies from 40Hz to 2kHz between the low and mid bands, and 2kHz to 15kHz between the mid and high bands, while the low and high bands also offer a choice of three side-chain filter frequencies. The lower half of the module’s front panel houses a dry/wet mix dial for parallel processing, a master output level control and a pair of buttons that allow users to quickly switch between two different setting configurations.

Software

The key feature of the company’s ng modules is, of course, their DAW integration. The module can be controlled entirely from a companion plug-in, meaning that all of its settings can be stored and recalled as part of the DAW session file. It also makes it possible to automate any of the module’s parameters, either by drawing in data in a DAW’s automation lanes, or writing it in during playback using the Pandora’s 10 touch-sensitive encoders.

It’s worth noting that although the module occupies three slots in a 500‑series rack, its stereo operation means that only the first two are used for audio connections. As all of its digital functions can be accessed via the front-panel USB socket, it is compatible with all standard 500‑series racks. When used with Wes Audio’s own Titan chassis, however, multiple ng modules can be controlled via a single USB or Ethernet cable.

Pricing & Availability

The Pandora is available now, priced at $1399€1199.
